Make Sure You Receive Your Email from Summit University®
Summit University uses email as the primary way to communicate with SU Online students and applicants. SU also occasionally sends informational emails regarding upcoming programs and opportunities. This guide is to help you whitelist SU emails so you receive emails from SU without a problem. In order to protect you from spam, most email services and Internet Service Providers (ISPs) have in place a program to filter out spam for their customers. While well intended, they often block requested emails and newsletter subscriptions if the email fits their spam description.
Why would SU email get stopped?
Spam filters that are set on the highest security level will often block email that uses HTML (different colors and font sizes), includes images or has an attachment. Our emails use HTML, often include images, and occasionally contain attachments. So, SU email, though not spam, may still be held up in the spam filter.
You can keep your Summit University email from getting trapped by a spam blocker by “Whitelisting” us.
Since each email provider has a different way to add or whitelist email addresses, below are instructions for Gmail, Yahoo, AOL and Hotmail. If your email provider is different, just contact your Internet or email provider’s customer service department for their instructions.
Simplest step to take
The simplest step for all email situations is to add the following SU addresses to your address book:
Click on your email service provider listed below to find instructions particular to your email provider or email software:
- Google Gmail
- Outlook.com (formerly Microsoft Hotmail)
- Outlook, Outlook Express, Thunderbird, Eudora, Netscape Mail and Others
AOL has one of the most aggressive spam blocker default settings of the major email providers.
For AOL Ver. 9.0:
- Add the sending address to your “People I Know” list.
- Open the latest issue of email you want to white-list.
- Click the “Add Address” button (on the right) to add the sender to your “People I Know” list.
Alternatively, replying to an SU email automatically adds the address to your “People I Know” list. Even if the email you send doesn’t get through (for whatever reason), the act of sending it adds the address to your “People I Know” list.
If you use an earlier version of AOL, you need to set your Mail Controls instead.
- Click on Mail Controls.
- Select the screen name the SU email is received by.
- Click “Customize Mail Controls For This Screen Name”
For AOL Ver. 8.0:
- Select “Allow email from all AOL members, email addresses and domains”.
- Click Next until the Save button shows up at the bottom.
- Click Save.
For AOL Ver. 7.0:
- In the section for “exclusion and inclusion parameters”, “include” the summituniversity.org domain showing in the “From” address.
Either add the SU sending address to your Contacts list or mark any incorrectly filtered email as “Not Spam”.
Adding to Contacts:
- Open the latest issue of the email you want to whitelist.
- Click the “More Options” link that is on the title line of the email, over on the right, next to the date. (If you see “Hide Options” instead, then you already have the extra options visible and can skip this step.)
- When or if the extra options are visible just below the subject line, click the “Add sender to contacts list” link.
Alternatively, you can whitelist an address just by sending an email to the SU address in the “From” address automatically adds it to your Contacts list.
- Open any SU email
- Click the “Reply” link at the bottom of the email, on the left.
- A new email window opens with the address pre-filled in the “Send To” box.
- Click “Send Now” in the top right corner.
Whether or not the email gets through, the address is added to your Contacts list because you sent the email.
Whitelisting Summit University emails sent to the Spam folder:
- Click on the “Spam” link to open your Spam folder.
- Click on the Summit University email to open it.
- Click the “Not Spam” button at the top of the email right next to “Delete Forever”.
- Now your email is whitelisted and should not get filtered to the Spam folder.
Outlook.com (formerly Microsoft Hotmail)
Add our “From” address to your Safe List:
- Click the Options tab.
- Select Safe List under the heading “Mail Handling”.
- In the space provided, enter the address in the “From” line of your most recent Summit University email.
- Click Add.
- When you see the address you entered in the Safe List box, click OK.
Ensure that your Summit University email gets delivered to your Inbox (not the Spam or Bulk Mail folder) by:
- Open your Yahoo mailbox.
- Click Mail Options > Filters > Add Filter.
- In the top row “From header:”, make sure “contains” is selected in the pull-down menu.
- Click in the text box next to that pull-down menu and enter the email address showing in the “From” line of your most recent Summit University email.
- At the bottom, on the “Move the message to:” pull-down menu, select “Inbox”.
- Click the “Add Filter” button again.
Others Email Providers and Setups
If you are using a popular email program, like Outlook/Outlook Express, Thunderbird, Entourage, Eudora, or Netscape Mail to receive your email from a local Internet service provider (ISP) and they don’t have an online spam blocker that can be edited, you may need to contact your ISP’s customer service rep to ensure your email delivery. Tell them that Summit University emails are emails that you want to receive and ask them to whitelist email from us. You may need this information:
- Sending Addresses: store@SummitUniversity.org, payments@SummitUniversity.org, registrar@SummitUniversity.org and support@SummitUniversity.org
- Domain: @summituniversity.org
