Academic Guidelines on the Use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Summit University permits the responsible use of generative artificial Intelligence (AI) tools to support student learning. Acceptable uses of AI include checking spelling, punctuation, and grammar, as well as assisting students with research.  These tools may assist students in improving their writing, but all work submitted must reflect the student’s own ideas, understanding, and effort.  Using generative AI to write forum postings or assignments violates academic integrity standards.

Citations are required for all quoted and paraphrased material that comes from an outside source.  Just like citing a book, article, or website, students should use APA or Chicago style citation guidelines for citing generative AI tools to give proper credit to the use of generative AI tools in their research and academic writing.

Submitting AI-generated content as original work violates Summit University’s Academic Integrity Guidelines and may result in disciplinary action.  Faculty reserves the right to use AI detection tools to evaluate student submissions for the appropriate use of AI. Students may be asked to provide evidence of their writing process, including query prompts, drafts or research notes, if improper use of AI is suspected.
